The ONE Google Maps Setting That Changes Everything
How Your Categories Decide Who Sees You
Imagine your shop is a "Cafe." Simple, right? But what if people are searching for "Coffee Shop with Wi-Fi," "Vegetarian Brunch Spot," or "Study Cafe"? If your Google Maps profile *only* says "Cafe," you're missing out on most of those customers.
As an Ex-Google Maps Specialist, I've seen that the single most overlooked (and most powerful!) setting is your Google Business Categories. This tells Google's AI what you *actually are*—not just what you *call* yourself. Getting this right is like unlocking dozens of new customer pathways.
Your 3-Step Category Power-Up:
- Step 1: Get Your Primary Right. This is the most important. If you sell coffee *and* books, are you primarily a "Coffee Shop" or a "Book Store"? Choose the one that brings in the most income.
- Step 2: Add ALL Relevant Secondary Categories. This is where you grab extra customers. If you're a "Coffee Shop," also add "Cafe," "Breakfast Restaurant," "Wi-Fi Hotspot," etc. Google lets you add many!
- Step 3: Match Categories to Your Services. Look at your "Services" list (we talked about this in a previous post!). Do your categories match? If you list "Pet Grooming" as a service, make sure "Pet Groomer" or "Pet Store" is a category.
