Waking up to a wave of 1-star reviews from people who were never your customers is a nightmare. Whether it's a "review attack" from a competitor or a bot, you have the right to fight back.

Step 1: Identify "Removable" Content

Google won't remove a review just because you disagree with it. It must violate one of these Prohibited Content rules:

  • Spam: Identical reviews posted from multiple accounts.
  • Conflict of Interest: Reviews from competitors or current employees.
  • Off-topic: Complaining about politics or social issues instead of your service.
  • Harassment: Use of profanity, slurs, or personal attacks.

Step 2: The Professional "Public" Reply

Strategy: Even if you are reporting it, reply first for other customers to see.
"Hello, we have no record of a customer by your name or a service matching your description. We take our reputation seriously and have reported this for investigation."

Step 3: How to Flag the Review

  1. Find the review on your Google Business Profile.
  2. Click the three dots (⋮) and select Report Review.
  3. Select the most accurate category (e.g., Spam or Conflict of Interest).
  4. Wait 72 Hours: If it's still there, use the Business Profile Management Tool to appeal the decision.
